Here are some valuable Essential Oil tips

Oil Tip # 9 - 9/12/10
OnGuard
With school back in session, it seems that colds and flu viruses are everywhere and our families are more susceptible to all kinds of illness.  doTERRA has a wonderful blend of essential oils called "OnGuard" which helps guard us against those viruses.  The essential oils can penetrate the cell walls where antibiotics cannot. This blend addresses: bacteria; immune system support; mold; topical disinfectant; virus.
Here are some hints on using the blend "OnGuard"
1.  Apply to surfaces to kill germs and pathogens. Diffuse in rooms to provide immune support and to rid the area of bacteria, viruses, mold, and fungi.
2.  Apply topically with massage to feet, back, neck and shoulders to offer immune support.
3.  Apply with lymphatic massage at the onset of or during illness. The oils included in this type of blend are GRAS.
4.  Take 2-3 drops per day orally for 3 days prior to surgery and apply with massage to strengthen immune system and guard against infection.
5.  Take orally with honey, agave, or juice at the onset of nagging symptoms of cold, flu, and viruses.
6.  At the onset of sore throat or to fight laryngitis, place 2-3 drops in ¼ cup of water, gargle, swish and pull for 5 minutes, then spit. Take 2 drops internally.
7.  Add 2-3 drops of protection blend and 1 drop of lemon in 1 tablespoon of olive oil and take internally every hour up to 8 hours while relief comes from gallbladder attacks. One can apply similarly using digestive blends.
8.  Add several drops to distilled water in a spray bottle and use the mixture to disinfect surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom.

doTERRA makes a number of products to make it easier to use the OnGuard blend.  These include throat drops, hand wipes, and a foaming hand wash with a push top dispenser.

Oil Tip # 8 - 7/20/10
Pick-Me-Up Body Spray with Pure Essential Oils
Need a little pick-me-up? This body spray recipe (originally featured in Body + Soul magazine) is sure to chase the blahs away and help balance your mood.
dōTERRA’s CPTG essential oils allow you to surround yourself with nature’s subtle fragrances throughout the day. Use this mist on your hair, skin, or home/office environment.
Ingredients:
To Make the Spray:
1. Fill a clean, dry mini spray bottle with 4 ounces of pure distilled water.
2. Using a dropper, carefully put the selected blend of essential oils directly into the spray bottle.
3. Tightly close the bottle and shake vigorously to combine. Be sure to shake it before each use, as the water and essential oils tend to separate. Don’t get spray into eyes – it will sting!

Misc. Tips - #7 - 6/27/10
I’ve been on vacation for most of the last three weeks and haven’t done my oil tips.
My friend and mentor, Pat Leavitt, has been on a road trip and doing a couple of IronMan Expo’s while traveling.  She just shared with me some oil tips and I am sharing them with you.   I second her - I LOVE THESE OILS!!!

Well we just did our second Iron Man and boy have we learned a lot.
Thought it might be interesting to send a few of the tips we learned!

1. We found that Breathe rubbed on the chest and under the nose, keeps the airways open for the athletes. They especially liked it after the swim.

2. We had an athlete stop at our booth for help with a bruised heel. We put Deep Blue and Peppermint on it and sent him off with a sample amount for later that night. He was able to run in the Iron Man.

3. Everyone loved the way Slim and Sassy helped them with hydration. I know its great as a metabolic blend but it works great for staying hydrated also.

4. We handed out samples of Lavender to relax the athletes so they could get a good nights rest before the race.

5. I would guesstimate that we went through 4 bottles of Deep Blue and two roll ons. It gave so much relief to these athletes that needed help before the race/

6. A women with Planter Faciatis, I put Wintergreen and Lemongrass on the bottom of her foot, wrapped it in a hot moist towel and then, with one hand pushing the heel back firmly and the other hand over the toes and pulling them towards me. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat 30 minutes later and as often as needed. Her pain receded and she was one happy racer.

7.Okay this was really fun. We stopped in Dillon Montana at Countryside RV Park. I went into the office and the owner had a beautiful dog, who was part English Setter and part Great Pyrenees. The dog could not stop sneezing. I told her that I had an essential oil that would help her dog stop sneezing and would she mind if I got some for her. I put a drop each of Lemon, :Lavender and Peppermint, held it in my hand and the dog licked it right off. Then I put some on his paw and he licked it off. He never sneezed again. So now I have a new IPC in Dillon Montana. If you ever go to Dillon you need to stop at this park, the people are incredibly friendly and the park was wonderful. One of the most amazing sunsets I have ever seen was right there in Dillon Montana. If you stop say hi to Valerie.

8. We gave out so many shots of allergy oils that we lost count. Two drops each of Lemon, Lavender and Peppermint in a swig of water and they felt so much better.

9. A woman who had signed up for the Iron Man came by the booth and had been really ill with Bronchitis. She was afraid she would not be able to participate. I put some Breathe on a cotton pad and had her breathe it. She got really stuffed up but I explained that she was getting it loose. I gave her a couple of shots of the allergy blend and a little Breathe for her to use throughout the night. She was going across the park for a massage so I took the massage therapist some breathe to put on her back and chest. When I checked on her yesterday the massage therapist said that all the yucky stuff was coming out and she could breather for the first time in two months.
I LOVE THESE OILS!!!

Green Cleaning – Traveling Tip #6 - 5/23/10
We are looking at traveling this week to Florida for a few weeks so, I was reminded of some tips for traveling when staying in hotels.  They may change the sheets but they don't launder the blankets and bed covers daily.  I like to spray so it smells like home and I know that I have a safe environment (as far as bacteria etc.) to sleep in for my family.
Green Cleaning:For mattress and sheets/blankets etc.: 1/4 c. distilled water 5 drops Wild Orange essential oil (or On Guard)Mix together in spray bottle. Shake before each use. This fragrant solution is highly effective in eliminating pathogens while also adding an uplifting, fresh aroma.

Thin Hair - Tip #5 - 5/16/10

I have suffered (not very silently!) with my hair thinning on the front top of my head.  My beautician has stated again and again how thin it is on the front top, but how thick it is in the back of my head.  I tried using Rosemary oil after my shampooing of my hair.  I wash my hair every other day so after my shower, as I dried my hair, I would put a few drops of Rosemary onto my scalp and rub it in.  After I had done this for six weeks, I went into have my hair cut and my beautician asked what had I done to my hair, it was very shiny and healthy looking.  I didn't tell her anything because at that time I did not attribute it to the Rosemary oil. Six weeks later and my beautician commented that I had a lot of new hair growth.  I notice the new growth on the front top of my head also. Now I have cut back to once a month doing the Rosemary oil treatment because I haven't got thin hair on the front top of my head anymore.  AMAZING!!

I note that Pat, a friend, indicated that she put Rosemary and Peppermint oil into her shampoo for similar results.

Varicose Veins – essential oil tip #4

Varicose Veines before oils treatmentI came across this testimonial about varicose veins and doTERRA's helichrysm oil and I had to share it with all of you!  Amazing oil !!

The technique used with helichrysm was to mix 50 drops of helichrysm in 8 ounces of an all-natural lotion base and applied to her legs for six weeks.  The attached photos show the amazing difference after six weeks!

Allergies Revisited – 5/02/10

This last Wed., Thurs, and Fri.,  I was involved in a booth at the Ironman Expo.  Four of us shared a doTERRA booth and met lots of athletes (from all over the world), family and friends of athletes, neighbors and friends in the community, volunteers and staff at the Dixie Center.

Word got out that we could help with allergies and many of the staff came by for their “shot”.  We teasingly called it an allergy “shot” because you use just a little water –a shot- and to it add two drops each of lemon, lavender and peppermint.  Put it into your mouth and swish it around for a few moments and then swallow.  We also gave them a few drops of a blend called breathe to rub into their hands and inhale deeply.

Many became believers in essential oils! It was exciting to see the oils work on so many people!!  So, if the eucalyptus doesn’t work for you, I guarantee that the “shot” will.  Some had to come back about a half-hour later for a second “shot” but, no one wasn’t cleared up by the second one.  Amazing!!!!!

Insect Repellent - 4/25/10

Last week I started off talking about a neighbor with a swarm of bees and was in need of a natural way to disburse them from her yard.  I had a couple people tell me that I never told them how to do that.

Even though I have not found an essential oil that says it specifically will address that issue, I do have some tips on insect repellent for you.  As the days are warming up, we are finding ourselves sitting outside longer in the evenings and if your house is anything like mine, the doors don't always get closed.  Last year, I was attending evening meetings the first Tuesday of each month at Pat Leavitt's home to learn more about the essential oils.  This year I am hosting first Tuesday of the month meetings at my house to learn more about essential oils but, I digress.  It intrigued me that Pat would leave her front door open for people to come in and I noticed that no insects ever came in.

I asked Pat recently what she did to keep the bugs out and she said that she diffused On Guard oil ( a blend of Citrus oils, cinnamon, clove & eucalyptus) and cinnamon before the meeting and she thought that that helped keep out the insects.  She also uses peppermint on a cotton ball to keep ants and other crawly insects out.  I think that I'll try doing those this spring/summer.

One of my essential oils books "Essential Oils Reference Guide" by R. L. James says of insect repellents:

"*Mosquito: birch, clove, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, lemongrass, melaleuca, orange, peppermint and thyme.  Some essential oil companies now prepare special blends that are formulated as insect repellents and are very effective.  doTERRA does have a blend called TerraShield - we had a family reunion last year in the mountains of Idaho and that is what I used because I did not want to use a commercial insect repellent with deet (because of possible side effects it has-especially on the babies).  The rest of the family members there were using commercial insect repellents.  I found that our family even though we had to put ours on more often, had fewer insect bites (and it smelled better than the commercial repellent).

*Ticks: eucalyptus, lavender, and geranium.

*Cockroach: blend in 2 parts peppermint and one part cypress

*Ants: peppermint

Of course, the application depends on the insect.  For mosquitoes and other flying pest many suggest making a spray using water, and or a carrier oil and the essential oils.  Some suggest distilled water others using a carrier oil that is kind to the skin.  Most suggest about a 5% dilution.  That is about 20 -30 drops of oil per once of carrier oil or water.  Then shake and apply topically to the skin.

For cockroaches, ants and other crawly pest, dilute and apply to the area where they enter the house or paths they frequent as they move about. "

Another book "Modern Essentials" suggest that you put 1 - 2 drops onto small ribbons, strings or cloth, and hang around area to help repel flying insects.

Let me know if these suggestions help any of you.

Hay Fever - Allergies 4/18/10

I was in a book club meeting this week and a friend of mine was sharing that she had bees that had split off from their hive and landed in her tree.  They were interested in finding a natural way to get them to move on without having to call the pest control people and I said that there are essential oils that are insect repellents but she didn't know I was into essential oils.

The more I thought about that, the more I realized that I have lots to share and maybe I should just put it out there - So here it is...................I am going to start a weekly essential oil tip.

A book, Modern Essentials, says of allergies: An allergy is a damaging immune system response to a substance that does not bother most other people.  Common allergies are to food, insect bites, pollen, dust, medicine, pets and mold.  Allergy symptoms vary greatly, but common allergic responses include itching, swelling, runny nose, asthma, and sneezing.  They have two recipes for Hay Fever.

Recipe 1:  Apply 1 drop of peppermint on the base of the neck two times a day.  Tap the thymus (located just below the notch in the neck) with pointer and index fingers.  Diffuse peppermint.

Recipe 2: For allergy rashes and skin sensitivity, apply 3 drops lavender, 6 drops Roman chamomile, 2 drops myrrh, and 1 drop peppermint on location.

Let me know if any of you try these recipes and how they work for you.
